WoodmanS WoodmanS1

This is a little of the history of the Woodman. It is work in progress with thanks to Les Middlewood and customers

In W.Branch-Johnson's "Hertfordshire Inns" he describes the pub as "Probably opened as a beerhouse about 1850, but little is known of it." This was 1962 and the brewery was Wells and Winch.

Joliffe and Jones' "Hertfordshire Inns and Public Houses" of 1992 says "Earliest known reference 1862? Beerhouse, full licence 1947. Greene King (1963), formerly Wells and Winch (1938), formerly E&H Wickham. Probably the beerhouse at Chapmore End which was being kept by D.Akers in 1862."
